POTC: On Stranger Tides review

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides is pretty much an awesome movie.

Johnny Depp returned as the likable Captain Jack Sparrow as well as Geoffrey Rush as Captain Barbossa in this fourth instalment. It certainly surpasses the third, mostly due to the storyline and introduction of new characters. I suppose the change of director is also a factor.

This latest movie still has plenty of fight scenes, shenanigans by Jack Sparrow, verbal sparring between Jack and Barbossa and ship jumping. The film also incorporates rich colours and the scenery is definitely a plus. It doesn’t help that much of the filming is done in beautiful Hawaii.

New characters such as the feared Blackbeard (Ian McShane) and Jack’s old flame, Angelica (Penelope Cruz) and creatures like zombies and mermaids help to spiff up this franchise. What capture my attention the most is the enchanting mermaids. It was both an haunting yet eerie scene when they sang before attacking the boat.

The way their tails move and glitter is really gorgeous. CGI has never look better. The fact that they are portrayed more to be deadly sirens that lure their victims with their songs, drown and eat them differentiate from the usual fare.  

 
What captures my attention is the new romance of two new individuals, the mermaid Syrena (Astrid Berges-Frisbey) and the missionary Phillip (Sam Claflin). They may be newcomers but their onscreen chemistry is definitely up to par. Theirs is a story that many fans would love to delve into. The last scene where Syrena pulled Phillip underwater after kissing him have many new fans crying foul because they want to know exactly what happens.

What else to say? Bring on Pirates 5!

On Sunday, the family went the newly renovated Shaw Theatres Lido to watch Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. This is my first time watching a movie here as usually I go for Golden Village. It has been quite long since we watch a movie together, all 11 of us.

It was not in IMAX 3D as one ticket cost a hefty $22. The theatre is too dark and I can hardly see the numbers on the seats, not a good thing. However, the seats are comfortable enough and the theatre we’re in is the biggest out of the ten.

After the movie, we went to Wheelock Place to eat dinner. The day seemed more like a Saturday than Sunday.

CNY Part 2

15th February 2010:

Hooray! Today was the day we were to watch Percy Jackson and The Lighting Thief in the evening. I booked the seats about 3 days ago. And when I checked it today, the whole theatre was already 4/5th full.

I can hardly wait for the movie showing, because I had waited for it for a very long time. Probably since I was in Sec 3 when I first read the book.

In the morning, we went to my maternal big aunt’s house to visit before proceeding to my paternal great-uncle’s (grandfather’s brother) house. The family usually go there on the first day but this year, we wanted a change and it is so much more fun if we meet up with my uncle and auntie’s families.

In truth, we had so much fun there. The teenagers and the adults. So much of loud talking and laughing! So many goodies to enjoy! Well, it’s a good thing I am able to understand dialect so I know what they are talking about.

After that, the family went to my maternal second aunt’s house at Ang Mo Kio. Stayed for a while and we went to bathe before going to Marina Square.

Woohoo! We were lucky enough to find a carpark lot since the carpark was full of cars looking for spaces.

Ate at Long John Silver and my father went to collect the pre-booked tickets. After reserving seats for a few times, I can’t stand having to queue for tickets for the seats which I am not pleased about. Guess with the ease of reserving your favourite and best seats online, I have pampered myself. Anyway, it’s not like it is not a good deal. I just have to pay $1 extra for one transaction. So, the more seats I booked, the less that dollar is proportioned.

I booked 2 rows on the right side. One for the adults and one for the teenagers. This time, we were not late for the trailers.

I enjoyed the movie very, very much. Perhaps, it was due to I went in with no expectations on my part. I mean, it had been a long time since I read the book and I do not complete the series. So, practically, I can’t compare it page by page.

I think I know what other fans meant when they say that to enjoy a movie adaptation, one have to go in with low or no expectations and be open-minded. Obviously, it is easier said than done.

If that book is beloved, normal fans can hardly stand it when it got plummeted and made into something without containing the essence of the book.

Kudos to Chris Columbus! Is it an irony that he too directed Harry Potter SS and CoS? I don’t like how people compared these 2 book series. Sure, there are some similarities. However, to quote Chris Columbus, fantasy books often have similarities. I think as long as authors are not outright copying other authors’ work, it is alright.

Percy Jackson is about Greek myths and gods in the 21st century. I distinctly remembered that I felt that it was a breath of fresh air reading about the books because it was just so original. Zeus and the other gods and goddesses holding their counsel in the Empire State building? Wow, that is so cool!

Also, it must have kick-start my passion and interest for Greek Mythology. I went online and searched more on the wide range of Greek Myths and stories of gods and goddesses. Or was it the other way round? I had an interest in myths and tales before Sec 3 and finding Percy Jackson by Rick Riordan was something special.

Either way, I did not complete the series because it was a long wait for me and I moved on to other genres. However, after watching this movie, my interest perks again. This time, I will complete the series. It still remain to be seen if I will buy the books or to borrow it.

Meanwhile, moving on to the actors and the cinematography of the film.

Logan Lerman who played Percy Jackson is set to be the rising star to come. He portrayed the character very well indeed. It doesn’t help that he is good looking as well. The adult secondary cast were all chosen well, a trait that Chris Columbus takes with him from his HP days.

The CGI and special effects were brilliant! The backgrounds were very well-done!

Overall, I love the movie despite the understanding that it differs quite a lot from the book. As I said, I went in there with no expectations and I enjoyed it. It wasn’t really my top favourite book series so I can accept some changes.

I can’t wait for the sequel which I heard is due in 2012.

The last day of the Lunar New Year holidays before everything goes back to normal. I'll miss these days.

In the morning, my brothers had to do their school work and in the afternoon, we joined my cousin’s family and the grandparents at Wheelock Place’s Sakae Sushi for lunch. My aunt came along too. One table for the adults and another for the teenagers.
-
There weren’t many plates of sushi going round because I think the chefs were not all back or something. Anyway, we had fun, eating and chatting away. Lots of plates of sushi and sashimi were ordered at the adults’ table.
-
We went for a walk at Ion Orchard. Boy, was there crowded. But, it seemed like everyone was just aimlessly walking up and down, as if there was nothing to do. Well, who are we to say others, right? We were walking aimlessly too.
-
Went for coffee at TCC opposite. I didn’t really like TCC so I didn’t order anything. There was no space for us in the air-conditioned area so we were made to sit outside. It will be good if the weather eased up a little. It is no secret that one of my wishes is to enjoy a cuppa at an outdoor pavilion with gentle breeze or cooler air about, obviously in an overseas setting.

We parted our ways at about 4 plus. I then went on to Borders to find some books but I didn’t buy any because I forgot the author’s name and the books I wanted weren’t available. Anyway, I plan to go down to Orchard next week.

And so, the long weekend ended without much fanfare.

This Lunar New Year had been tremendously great and fun. I enjoyed myself very much. Spending it with the family and close relatives, what more could we wished for? I just want this to last for many years to come.

These past days had me sleeping very, very late, sometimes at 1am in the morning.
-
Furthermore, I am disappointed again by Mediacorp. What!? No full coverage of Vancouver Winter Games 2010? It is my favourite Olympics games! The sports are far better and superior than the Summer games, at least in my opinion.

It’s time to ease up and rewind myself. Against my better judgement, I signed myself up for 4 days of work per week. Originally, I was going to say that I’ll be only working for 3 days. I need the time for myself, alright?
-
Holidays are for me to relax and just chill. I’m not someone with no life who work all day long. For goodness sake, I even feel guilty about spending my hard-earn money! What logic is that?
-
Well, well, I’m that person now, aren’t I?
-
But, I am determined to water-paint and make my countdown clock soon. Of course, not forgetting my beloved books waiting to be read.

Rockin around the shopping centres

These past weeks had been pretty fun.

On the next day after my last paper, 10th December, my father was going to take us to the newly opened 313 @ Somerset.

My brother and I were to take the MRT and meet my father there.

Was I because I was ill the couple of days before or due to some dire problems I have no idea of or hypoglycemia? Suddenly, in the middle of the ride, I started to break out in cold sweat and then for a while my vision turned black, I could hardly see my brother's face and the other things in the MRT. I was sure that my face must have turned ashen. I was really afraid I'm going to faint in the train, and not only was that embarrassing, but horrible.

In the end, with my brother in tow, I alighted at Orchard MRT station, one station before Somerset and went in search of toilet as I felt like puking. Went to Wheelock Place, a similar place to me and was starting to feel fine. However, I didn't want to risk another encounter like that ever so I wanted to go home. By then, my father still haven't arrive.

Finally, I wanted to get some sugar into me and was thinking of nursing a glass of cold, sugary drink. My better judgement got hold of me so I ordered a cup of hot chocolate instead. I was still feeling weak and mortified.

Walked around Borders for a while because my father said he would be there in half-an-hour. I was already alright and we had lunch at Sakae Sushi. Next, we went to our destination as planned.

313 @ Somerset wasn't officially opened since there are so many shops still under closed doors. But, I still had fun. Tried out the Cold Rock creamery, it is good. I was planning to buy my Christmas present at Esprit but the bag I wanted was out of stock.

We then went to Marina Square to try our luck. The bag I originally wanted didn't look so nice after a second glance. So, I bought another model.

As the car was parked at Suntec City, we walked around Suntec City for a bit. We saw that the Ralph Lauren store was having a up to 70% sales and went in. Wow, it's full of people though no clothes caught my eye.

We were going to come back on Saturday and asked my mother to check it out.

Went back on Saturday and was shocked that almost all the clothes were gone. All that's let was children clothing and some loose pieces.

The week after, my father and mother took leave and we went for a day's tour in Singapore. Since we are not going anywhere for the holidays. In the end, we hung around VivoCity for the whole day.

Watched Planet 51 in the afternoon. It is a pretty funny movie, very nicely done with a different plot.

Ate an early dinner at Earle's Swensens. Still didn't really like it. I prefer the normal Swensens.

We then went to buy our presents for the other person we had randomly picked.

By nighttime, we were tired and our original plan to visit Night Safari ended up not being fulfilled.

It was a good day for me.

Great day!

Had a great day yesterday! My mother was due for her eye check-up at Raffles Hospital after her surgery and I tagged along with my parents because I wanted to go to Borders and Kinokuniya.

The check-up was surprisingly fast and we were on our way to Orchard at about 10 plus.

We parked at Nee Ann City and I had a curry puff before walking to Ion Orchard to cross the underground linkway to Wheelock Place. I was feeling particularly like the tourists on the walk-way. The sun was not shining too brightly and the streets were quite empty for once. What a lovely feeling!

This was my parents’ first time in Ion since my father hated crowds. The shops are opened and we decided to shop around later as I wanted to go Borders first. Had a hard time finding the linkway to Wheelock Place since this was only my second official time there.

As usual, Borders fails to satisfy and amuse me. I’m beginning to feel irritate at it. The books I want are not available, even Thirteen Chances by Cindy Miles which was just released from USA. I get it that importation takes time but why can’t my wish came true?

In the end, I bought a novel by Lynn Kurland, the only available title at Borders. I’m wondering if they ever take stock and update their collection. This is not funny at all. I asked about the special orders from overseas and it will cost me $6.90 extra for each book.

Walked to Ion again, this time to do window-shopping. Love the feeling of spaciousness! Decided to do lunch at the so-called famous Food Mall. It was quite empty except for a few patrons as lunch time was still not here.

Finally found what I’ve been looking for! Royce Chocolate brings back fond memories of the memorable trip to Hokkaido 2 years ago. I remembered visiting the shop in Hokkaido and my auntie buying and sharing the chocolate squares on the bus.

Royce is tucked away in a small corner at B4 at Ion. The store is awash in blinding white and gives it a clinical yet pristine feel. The various types of chocolates are displayed prominently in glass squares.

One of the staff served us and let us tried the Champagne and Bitter Nama Chocolates. It is heavenly. Bought a box of Bitter Nama Chocolates which cost $15 and is stored in this silvery material to keep it cool for 5 hours. I’ll try the other products next time. The Potatochip Chocolates looks delicious...

Did more window-shopping. Gazed in wonderment at the prices of the Swarovski crystals figurines at Swarovski. The lighting effects and the cuts of the crystals make it shine and dazzle. Of course, it makes my hands itch. I’ve a soft spot for cute things. A couple of the crystal figurines caught my eyes and I went squeal.

Went to ThreeSixty Marketplace located at F4 of Ion. It was so cold in there. And it will no doubt make you feel colder when you see the prices of some of the fruits. $68 for a watermelon, anyone? How about $100+ bunch of the finest grapes from Japan?

Walked back to Takashimaya and we went to Kinokuniya. I looked for my books and finally bought another novel from Lynn Kurland. That’s it. I’m reserving the other titles from the library in Singapore. No chance in getting Thirteen Chances.

I asked the Information counter about it and was told it will be here in about 2 week times. Once again, I asked about the special orders and it will cost me no extra to import a book. Wow, Kinokuniya really went my book-O-metre.

I’ll probably go back in 2-3 week times to see.

Went to the food section at Takashimaya and bought drinks. The boxes at the various chocolate stores are so pretty and cute! I’d love to get my hands on them.

Bought some vegetables from Cold Storage and went home.

What a morning! It’s been quite some time that the 3 of us went out on a weekday, to Orchard no less. One of favourite places in Singapore. Window-shopping is better than none at all.

Outing with friends 2009

My friend reached Singapore on Sunday morning via flight from USA. It's been a year, since I last saw her though I chatted with her almost everyday on Facebook.

Together with some other classmates from Sec 4, we met up for a gathering.

Mostly, I was the organiser. So, imagine my distress when I can't contact my friend at all. I've tried her US phone number to no avail. I was really at a loss of what to do.

Thankfully, all worked out in the end. Just as soon I meet up with another friend to discuss about it, she called me. Turned out that her phone has no signal.

It was great to see her, this time with an accent! And I finally got the Twilight DVD and wolf charm which I asked her to help me buy. I have to return the money soon.

When the others who were supposed to meet us at Khatib MRT came, we travelled to Wheelock Place for Sakae Sushi.

Altogether, 5 guys and 5 girls went to this gathering. There were supposedly to be more, but they dropped out. The 10 of us squeezed into a table at Sakae.

Walked around Orchard Road for a while and it started to drizzle. We then went to Bugis and watched movie in Iluma, the new entertainment centre in Bugis. I don't even know there's a new building at Bugis, seeing that I seldom go to that area at all.

There were not many movie choices to choose from. 3 choices were left: Terminator Salvation, Blood, and Drag me to Hell. The problem was that I don't watch this kind of movies. Drag me to Hell is absolutely a no-no since it's pure horror. Blood is M18, though I'm already 18, there are still others who are not.

Thus, we bought tickets for Terminator. In other circumstances, this is the kind of movie which I won't considered watching. Anyway, I keep my eyes adverted whenever I feel that I can't handle the scenes.

Before the movie, since we had some time left, the guys went to play at the arcade, and us girls had some "girl-time" at Coffee Bean.

My definition of frightening differs from the average person's. Giant, mutated animals movies scared me, so do gore (aka Sweeney Todd) and action violence and thrillers. Pretty pathetic, maybe.

I'm blessed and cursed with over-active imagination. I make up story-plots and fanfiction in my head which I don't penned down. But memories and images of different "horror" shows I've been unfortunate to view all jumbled up, becoming one big horror show that keep replaying in my head at night.

The movie ended around 9 plus. Walked to a hawker centre for a late dinner. I was not feeling very well so I ordered something light. I think the moment the movie had started, I was already feeling queasy.

When we finally parted, it was 11 plus. I reached home by 12am since my father came to Yishun MRT to fetch me.

Other than the watching of Terminator, it had been a wonderful day. My friend is scheduled to go back in Indonesia soon, so, there should be a gathering before she leaves.

Isetan

It's been quite long since I last updated. I've time, but I don't feel like writing or typing for that matter.

Went to Isetan at Shaw Centre. I wanted to get a bag for the new school term.

Just as we were finding a parking lot, we past by a yellow Porsche! I saw the emblem of Porsche on the car hood. I told my brothers about it and later, we went there to take a look. It's yellow, it's sporty, too bad it's a Carrera and not Turbo 911.

My brother took pictures of it, although he should have zoom in on the emblem. Ahh well, I should take some pictures myself too, but didn't.

We ate at Sakae Sushi at Wheelock Place. It's been quite a while since I last ate at Sakae Sushi.

Walked back to Isetan and visited the supermarket. All those different kinds of Japanese food and products makes me excited. I saw the $90 melons. Wow, imagine I were to buy one, my mother said the peel and seeds should be eaten too.

We bought some of the cracker beans and Shishamo. I love Shishamo, but it's expensive to eat it in Japanese resturants. It's quite cheap if you buy it in supermarkets though.

I just released that Isetan at Orchard Road is different from the Isetan in Tampines Mall. For one, there isn't much choices on 'normal' bags. Almost all bags and shoes sold there are branded goods.

Anyway, I bought a Reebok Bag. Why is it that whenever I want something, it will be the last piece or not available anymore? That bag is the last piece but since it's OK, I just bought it.

Had drinks at McCafe outside Isetan. It's quite the lovely place, like we are tourists.
