Royal Wedding of the Century

"Everybody loves a good love story, and when it's a royal love story, it's the best love story" ~ Piers Morgan

Today, 29th April 2011, marks a new chapter for the British Monarchy where Prince William marries Ms Kate Middleton. They are a very compatible and loving couple and have withstand the test of times since University.

Congratulations is in order for this wonderful and joyous occasion.

May them stay blessed and loving together for many years to come! Here's wishing them every success and happiness in this marriage!

I will be glued to the television screen, on the other side of the world, watching this big day.

Day before the Wedding

Since Princess Diana's wedding to Prince Charles, no other wedding has caught the imagination of the world in the same way. (Extracted from Sowetan Live)

The royal wedding of the century is just around the corner and it is set to be watched by millions around the world. Not only does it abuzz Great Britain, the rest of the world is also up in gear to celebrate this special day.
Indeed, what’s there not to love? Weddings are joyous occasions to be celebrated, and with the added charm of royalty, it is set to send hearts fluttering. Isn’t it every girl’s dream to have a “fairy-tale wedding”?
The British monarchy is one of the more renowned royal families in the world and one of the oldest. The thought of royals and palaces can be quite whimsical in this modern age, and I think this is one of the factors that awed people.
After all, they are quite elusive and it is only on special occasions that they are featured prominently. Furthermore, special occasions are quite hard to come by.
There are questions raised as to why non-Britons are interested in the wedding procession and I say Why Not? There is no denying that there is a certain X-factor the British monarchy enjoys and let’s just say there is this “Anglomania” going around, even in the 21st century.
To quote Ms Ong Soh Chin, senior writer of The Strait Times “The propensity of human beings in general is reduced to stupefaction before royalty.”
That being said, I love being an audience instead of the recipient. With every movement and action scrutinised by the general public and the paparazzi is not my idea of fun. You will be considered “public property” and people look up to you as a role model. There are strict protocols to adhere too. Gone are the days of plain fun and carefree living. You can’t go out to the streets without being hoarded.
Yes, the wedding will be grander than most people could hope for but there are sacrifices to be made. It will not be a close-knitted wedding, with friends and families. Oh no, foreign dignitaries and other royalty will be invited as with others.
What makes a strong marriage, particularly one in such circumstances, is knowing this is what you want. I think that the couple has enough time to think through carefully and this can be a happily-ever-after. As put by others, they met as equals and enjoy each other company for around 10 years, this should act as a strong base for them.
As for me, I have been looking forward to this day and it does not help that there are news articles about royal wedding trivia every other day. I will be looking out for that wedding gown which is set to make audience sigh and the procession to come.
The whole wedding will set to thrill millions tomorrow and I wish the couple every happiness in the world.

Three times the Charm?

"Too much of a blessing does not necessary mean a good thing"

Oh gods, I just received a phone call from SMU saying that I have been shortlisted for their Business Management course. The interview and English test is scheduled next Wednesday in the evening.

The problem is, I don't even know if I want to do Business anymore. Furthermore, SMU is not my choice of University.

Now that I have 3 Universities offering me courses, each a different one, this is definitely a dilemma. NUS will be my best bet. NTU Economics is out. As for SMU, well, the course offered is my first choice but do I want to do accounting again? Do I even want to be there?

Anyway, I will go for the interview, if I screwed it up, then it will be fine. All the more I will choose NUS. If I managed to score an offer, well, that's another tale for another day.

One is my second choice in the University I like the best. The other is my first choice in the University l like the least. The problem is should I go for something new or do maths again?

It is better if I did not receive the lousy phonecall at all. Sighs. I have already made up my mind to go into NUS. I know there are a lot of people who want a place in SMU, but given that, I think I should make an out-of-the-box choice.

A few weeks ago I was thinking unsavoury thoughts about what would I do if no Universities were to contact me. Then, NUS came with a salvation. Although it is not my first choice, there was something. I am thrilled. I almost made up my mind.

Few days later, NTU came with an offer of Economics, also my second choice. I would have jump at that months ago if I had not been enlightened. I want to minimise the risk of taking calculus again.

The last surprise is today, when I received that phonecall. It does not mean that I am offered a place, it's just shortlisted for an interview. Now I am more shell-shocked than pleased.

Interviews are not my thing. But I will go through them because there is no choice. My problem with SMU is partly because of this, and that I don't see what the big deal is. Everyone sings the praise of SMU but the way they conduct the classes don't appeal to me. And I had a hard time convincing myself that I don't need to go through calculus or Maths again. Am I quite naive to think that way?

I shouldn't say too much, eh? Else I would put my foot in my mouth if I choose SMU.

Nomination Day 2011

It's Nomination Day today in Singapore. Watching the live coverage on Channel Newsasia makes me excited even though I can't vote this year. The political scene is Singapore can be colourful, especially when it is the time for elections.

This year, fuelled by the extensive usage of social media sites, looks to be a highly competitive election with 82 of the 87 seats contested.

In my case, it is no secret which party I support. As with my brothers, we have a certain soft-spot for the ruling party since a long time. Though I can't vote this year, I will sure be watching the rallies and giving my moral support for my supported party.

The race is on to convince the voters of what the each party can offer.

Another Offer

I just received an offer of acceptance from NTU to read Economics! I am elated of course. I'm so proud to get selected without an interview. However, while I cheered, this is my second choice. I didn't get chosen for Business once again.

Sighs. Why? Perhaps it is just not meant to be. Anywho, Economics used to be the path I want to take, until I realised how much calculus there are. Econometrics, the sound of it turns me off. So, I decided to wise up and give up the dream of having a Degree in Economics. Yes, it's impressive but why do I jump into the fire pit when I know I'll get burnt?

Putting Economics as my second choice for NTU was meant not to be taken seriously. I feel like I have to expand my limited choices and therefore put 2 courses. Not bad, it's a 50-50 chance.

So, it's a recognition for my efforts and I am thrilled. As for SMU, I'm in a conundrum. On one hand, I don't have a good impression of the University, long story. On the other, I know it's quite a good University. But the idea of an entrance exam and interview just isn't my cup of tea.

Looks like I have one foot in for NUS.

Of Nail Polish & Money

Went for a pedicure today as a treat. The colour I picked is this deep pinkish plum named Do You Think I'm Tex-y? from Texas Collection 2011 by OPI. It's not bad though I wish I could have pick something more eye-popping.

If there is one thing I have a weakness for, it's nail polish, especially those from OPI. It is a downer because OPI collections are always more expensive than other brands. But the wide variety of colours to choose from...

Before I make any decisions to buy, I will always think twice and look through the swatches provided by bloggers. The colour depicted on the website or inside the bottle may not look the same on the nails. It's great that there are people out there who act as "samplers" and give readers a look at the real shades.

I am currently in awe over the latest collection, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. I bought one of the polishes today, Sparrow me the Drama. It's a pink creme and hopefully, looks lovely on my nails. There is another which I want, Mermaid Tears, a minty green creme.

On another issue, it isn't till you start working that you know how hard it is to save money. There are 101 things out there to tempt you! Of course, I am not a spendthrift. I am quite the hoarder. I am not earning lots, just some pocket money which can help me tide over. At least, when there are stuff that I really want, I can fork out the money for it, without asking the parents.

Up till now, most of the "essentials" and "non-essentials" are paid for by the parents. And unlike most teenagers out there, I don't spend it on electronics or presents or what have you. I have soft spots for clothes, bags, shoes and accessories, not forgetting books. That's pretty much it. I love vacations too.

Days Leading up to May

April is coming to an end. Wow, I know I have said it many times but time sure does fly when you are on holiday.

Today, a new semester starts in Temasek Polytechnic but of course, it is over for me. Do I miss school? I guess. A little.

May is a month fill with importanr dates. Labour Day is on 1st of May, a Sunday, which means the next day will be holiday in-lieu. Polling Day is on 7th May, a public holiday. Mothers' Day is on 8th May after which comes my birthday on 10th May. Gasp* I am hitting 2-0. I am not ready to be a "real" adult.

Vesak Day falls on the following Tuesday, 17th May and Graduation is on 24th May, another Tuesday.

So you can see, May is not a good month for work, but it's a good month to relax. As with so many holidays, there will be a need to do catch-up.

FASS

I went to the NUS Arts and Social Sciences briefing on Wednesday and was late for it. Thankfully, on the way, I met a fellow Poly student who sort of became my first acquaintance. I followed them to the lecture hall which I can never find it by myself.

Wow, it is an upward climb up to lecture theater.

The briefing gave me a lot to think about. My mind is not made up. I do not have a sure choice. I am thinking between Geography and Sociology among others. Sighs, I wish I am not given so many options.

I think the chances of getting another offer from the other Universities is quite bleak. I do not know, my GPA certainly is better than their 90% percentile. Perhaps the competition this year round is just too tough?

I do not know if having a Degree in Arts and Social Sciences is what I wanted. Will it get me a good job in the sector I want?

Travel the World

One of my dreams is to travel the world. Sort of.

Hopefully, I can do it once I am older and perhaps wiser. Afterall, I have plenty of years ahead to fulfil this goal. The world can't end yet!

Europe is definitely a must. It will be my goal for University graduation, in about 3 years time, if everything goes right. I don't think backpacking is my idea of fun. A tour group sounds better and maybe I can do an extension. Of course, tour groups don't cover my favourite countries in one package and it can be too demanding for my tastes.

I like the slow-pace life. So the best way to travel Europe is free and easy. However, this means that I have to travel with a couple of friends and make sure we know our way around.

Scotland is another hot favourite of mine and I have pay tribute to it in previous posts. Maldives is a great place too. Perfect for a getaway.

Like my brothers said, why go on a vacation if you are planning of saving every bit of money? To me, the point of going overseas means you are financially well-managed and can afford small comforts like flying with a better air company and staying in comfortable accommodations. I am not even talking of 5-stars luxury hotels and flying first-class.

To go on a holidays means I have to save and I will gladly do so.

To Each His Own

The worst thing is not being to achieve what you set out to do. I feel kind of cheated, it has been my goal for over one year and it's the strength to my success. Seriously, I save all my money for this.

I know, it sounds quite silly to go halfway across the world for something that has to do with my favourite fantasy world. But isn't this what dreams are made of? To each his own.

I think it's perfectly fine because we all have our own likes. What I hate is for people to pour what they call "cold water" on your plans. Urgh, it just pisses me off.

You know when people call the younger generation "strawberries" who can't withstand any forces. Well, who mound us that way? It's the typical Asian parents and society. When the chance arrives, just let us go, I say. I don't get it. Thousands of people are travelling in and out each day. Is it because of age? Well, even if you are thirty and the company sends you overseas, you still have to travel out for the first time. And you will still be afraid, darling.

External forces are keeping us from being independent and all that jazz. So, they have a hand in keeping this generation being dainty flowers which can only thrive in the greenhouses under controlled elements. Gods, no wonder we are accursed of not able to think out of the box.

Swarmed

I'm swarmed by the tons of information and dates should I accept the offer from NUS.

Seems like there is high chance of me doing so. C'mon. Up till now, this is the only offer I received and I am grateful for this opportunity. Besides, the thought of not having to go through an A Maths exam is enough to thrill me.

However, I am not so thrilled when I realise all Polytechnic students have to take the Qualifying English Test. What?! Why? I agree that the last time I had properly wrote an essay was in O levels 4 years ago.

But, I have been editing and writing reports in Polytechnic. I think that my command of English is not that bad. I am nervous about the thought of writing an argumentative essay. I can do reports and factual information, even recommendations, but arguments, not so much. Furthermore, with the heavy usage of writing online with help from spell check and online dictionary, spelling is not my greatest strength. Hence, asking me to put ideas to paper is going to be tough.

Oh dear, oh dear, of course I will take this test over A Maths anytime. I will have to give it my best. Now I know how tough it is for Polytechnic students to get into a University. That being said, I don't regret going into one, because I will not do as well if I were to go into a JC. Believe me, it's a gut feel.

With so many deadlines and tasks to do, I can only hope that my planned trip to the States will go ahead. 10 days should be sufficient to do what I need.

Offer of Acceptance

Pardon me while I do a jig.

Just when my mind is filled with morbid thoughts about not qualifying for University in Singapore, I received an email saying that I got accepted into NUS Arts and Social Sciences. OMG!

As we like to say it "hallelujah"! Wow, I have been waiting and waiting and everyday I started thinking about what to do if I can't make it to University this year. Furthermore, remember when I said I kind of screwed up the application process for NUS? I thought I had ruined my best chance.

NUS Arts and Social Sciences is my second choice in NUS. First is Business Administration. I really do want to do that, since that is what I studied in Polytechnic. I guess my GPA of 3.75 is not good enough. Afterall, I only met the cut-off point of 0.02 based on last year statistics.

Beggars can't be choosers. I am thrilled. Now, regardless of whether NTU or SMU accept me, I have a back-up plan. I like back-up plans.

Of course, if NTU offers me their Business course, I will go for that. If SMU offers me the same course, I don't know if I should choose that or NUS Social Sciences. I think what my mother said make sense, I already have a Diploma in Business and that is sufficent in the working world. A Bachelor of Social Science is a good catch too.

Oh boy, at least, right?

Blend

There isn't much to write about these days. Life is pretty mundane and I have yet to receive an acceptance. Oh crap. I tried not to think too much into it.

Hopefully.

It's horrible how fast the time is passing. Once again, another week has past. The days are beginning to blur together. I want to get back on track but it's hard since I wake up wanting to do nothing. The joys of holidays. I've forgotten what stress taste like.

Angsty April

Oh dear, oh dear, the joint acceptance portal is opened and now the race begins. Or should I say, doom's day has arrived.

I used to think that my GPA of 3.75 is not too bad but now, I realised that people having been getting 3.9 and 3.8! Of course, it is made more substantial when people are discussing it online. I have spent too much time spelling out my fears, how am I to stop?

I am not that confident anymore. These few days will be crucial to me. I need to gain acceptance to NUS first. Please. This will be the hardest to get into. Screwing up the checklist for NUS only add on to my fears of rejection.

I should be enjoying my holidays but how am I to enjoy when there are battles to be won? Huh? When I have one acceptance in my stash, only can I rest easier. I wish I could do more to ensure that I will be accepted. I already did my best and there is no use thinking about have-beens and what-ifs.

When I saw that people had been getting one pointers for their O levels, my heart sank a little. When I saw that those who got acceptance came from Singapore Polytechnic and Ngee Ann Polytechnic, my heart sank even more. Did I make the wrong choice? Was I mistaken from the start?

I did not regret the choice I make, well, at least it is not something of importance. I did like TP. I was given many chances to prove myself and I am grateful for the opportunities.

There is nothing left to write. I bare my heart out in these posts. No one can elevate my fears. Should all else fail, I can only curse my bad luck and try again next year. Right?! No!

Plan C

Crap! I just found out that I screwed something up. It is seriously depressing. I just realised that I left out the checklist when I was submitting the supporting documents to NUS.

All these time, I was only following what the NUS application guide brochure said. It was only today, when I looking through the website that I realised it. It's like a month too late. My mood fell immediately. Will I get a penalty for not doing that? Will it affect my application? NUS is my top choice! What will I do if this application falls through because of such a stupid mistake?!

I emailed the University and hopefully, they will give some good advice. I know, it's too late to make amendments. If anything untoward was to happen, then it is my fault.

I don't know what is wrong with me. Things have been wrong and I am getting so jittery nowadays. So what if I get a Diploma with Merit? It cheered me up but with all the things happening now with Universities, I don't know if that will be of any help.

I am thinking of worst-case scenarios if my worst nightmares come true and find myself in some parallel universe. Say I did not get in this year, what will I do? I will need to look for a job, go for a vacation, take up driving lessons and maybe do community work to boost my credentials. I will try again next year for Universities and this time, I will register for SIM too. There, it's only 1 year, one freaking year wasted.

I will look ridiculous, won't I? People have been telling me that with such grades, I should have no problem getting into a local University. Now that I have a Diploma with Merit and on the Honours List for being top 10%, it should boost my chances. But, why am I still so afraid and worried?

I have such fears and worries that I am too confident of my chances. Why can't I be satisfy like some people? Why did I have the thinking that a degree will lead to better opportunities in life? I am going crazy soon.

Freaked Out

I'm officially disturbed by SMU application. List 3 CCAs you considered to be important to you, what the crap, I only have 1 in secondary school. Anyway, I managed to squeeze out 3 for myself. One as a member, one as a committee member and the other for community service. Thank goodness the teacher elected me as a committee member.

I have finally applied to SMU although I have yet to send out the supporting documents.

I'm so jittery now. For one, I am freaked out by the mere thought of interviews in NTU and SMU. For that alone, I am determined to enter NUS. I know, pretty silly of me, but what can I say? After the interviews, I will be freaked out whether I'd screwed them up. I will sort of rest easy when the time for joint online acceptance comes.

Then, I will be worrying about the horrors of orientation. Gods, I sure have lots of things to worry about. And I entertained the thought of how carefree I'll be if I do not have such ambitions.

You know, if I have not done well the first semester and subsequently, just breezed through the rest of the semesters with Bs and Cs, I wonder if I will ever think about going to a local University which resulted in all these worries.

If only I can be contented with a part-time job and work full-time without a degree. If only in my dreams. I can't, that's not who I want to be. I want to have at least a degree. It is a common perception that having a degree will result in more opportunities in life.

I admire those people who have the means and will-power to drop everything they have in Singapore and leave for an overseas University. Afterall, it has been a dream of mine to study overseas until recently.

Ok, let's tackled things one by one. Interviews first and then the rest. I just need some time to breathe and conjure up politically-correct answers.

I need to have choices, damn it. That being said, please, let it not be just SMU which will accept me. I know I should be pleased to have a place, but I don't want to have to choose between SMU and nothing.

I have forgotten to mention about one very important aspect. Additional Mathematics. Yes, the bane of existence in secondary school. SMU and NTU requires one to have a good pass in A Maths, are you kidding me?! I don't even know if my C5 grade is acceptable. I can't go through an entrance exam in A Maths, I will just give up and walk away. Not after so many years of putting the misery behind me...

I am proud of my A Maths grade. It took me huge effort to get from F9 to C5. But, heck no, I am not going through the torture again. I'll take up tuition if I have to, but please, not an exam on A Maths. Not now.

Rude Awakening

I've been living my bubble of peace these past weeks. Therefore, it's a rude awakening for me when I realised one of my friends went for interviews for NTU and SMU. Already?!

As you probably will know, this bought me tumbling back to the ground. I have been dreading the news since I knew that there will be interviews. I know that I can't escape interviews in this lifetime. But, somehow, I just have this aversion and phobia for it.

I blushed terribly. This is what I am afraid of. And that I'll make a fool out of myself. There, I said it. My fear is so simple and yet profound. If I go to a counselor to voice my fears, their advice would perhaps be "don't worry, they don't know you anymore than you know them" or something else. The truth is, I know all these. I know the theoretical parts, but I just can't apply it to real life.

Sigh. I don't know what I will do. Of course I want the Universities to contact me, it will be a step towards gaining acceptance. But, on the other hand, I am so scared and worried that I would not do well. Seriously.

People will probably say there is nothing to worry about and it's very normal. I am not a normal person. Nevertheless, since there is no escape, I will just have to make the lines as I go along. I am good at that, no? It will give me a heart attack and makes me hyperventilate but if the results is good, then I have conquered.

Silver Lining

Now that I have time to cool off and take a closer look at my grades. I can see that they aren’t that bad. Of course, I am not as happy as I ought to be.

Managerial Accounting 2: B+

It’s a well-deserved grade because I remembered the horror when I received the 50% coursework of C+. After calculations, I realised that I need to score at least 80 marks in the exam to push the grade to a B+ and I did it.

Legal Aspects of Business: B+

Again, I had a B+ for 50% coursework. I could have had an A but due to complications in the group project which I underestimated big time. So, this is a grade I can live with.

International Business: B+

I only know one component which is 20% of the overall grade. I received a B for mid-semester test.

Given the lack of understanding of the project specifications and low confidence levels of scoring, I must say we did a pretty good job. In one of my previous posts, I stated that I was the one who interpreted the problem and did most of the researching. So, kudos to me! Like I said, I deserve this grade. If I can get an A, it would be the best.

Practice of Entrepreneurship: A

The only A this semester. Thankfully, this subject did not let me down. I felt that the project was good and I had confidence in this subject. Therefore, it is brilliant to see the fruits of my labour.

Student Internship Programme: Pass

Big letdown here. I am still reeling from the shock that I failed to score a “Pass with Commendation”. How is that even possible? I work my a*** off to get a good appraisal and in the end, I was dealt with a huge blow from my liaison officer.

The most crucial aspect in this whole drama is the cumulative GPA.

Semester 3.2’s GPA is the second-worst in the 6 semesters with a point of 3.63. In the end, there is only a 0.01 drop in my CGPA which is the silver lining in these dark clouds. My overall CGPA of 3.75 is still within the range to get acceptance into local Universities. Phew, after all these hardships, isn’t this the most important goal?

So, fingers-crossed that I will acceptance to all three Universities and give me the choice to choose.

The Curse of B+

Bloody hell! This is a bummer! What the crap! It was the worst semester ever!

My goal is to get 3As and 1 B+ and in the end, all I got were 3 lousy B+ and 1 freaking A! 1 freaking A!

This is disastrous! How am I going to qualify to a local University with such grades?! This will completely pull down my GPA!

I won't be truthful if I say I aren't upset. I am really not happy with this. At least there should be another A to counter the curse of B+. Seriously. My semester 3.2 GPA falls to a all-time low of 3.63. Are you kidding me?!

Come to think of it, remember the previous month when I got a D and C+ for some components? My goal then was to pull the subjects up to B+ and that was met. So why am I not happy?

Since when did I move my goal up to As?

It's not just about passing. It's not even in my agenda to get Bs. Sobs. I am not pleased at all with this development.

Bummer

It's the third week of the holidays and what have I been doing? Surprisingly, I did not suffer from withdrawal symptoms which arise from the transaction of "very busy" to nothing to do.

Most of the time, I just laze around, doing nothing except going online. But since the start of this week, I have to go to work 4 times a week which is a serious bummer. It's not like I like it in the first place. 2 times a week is alright. But 4 times, oh gods, I can't stand it!

I suppose I should be thankful. It's not like I have things to do at home and I get money, yay. I need to save up for a rainy day, even after I go for my vacation. Now, I need to beef up the bank account as much as possible. At least, I will have a substantial amount of savings to last through.

I have been watching a lot of satirical videos from Downfall parodies in which Hitler rants about everything under the sun to Monty Python and Not The Nine O'clock News. Now, I think I know the meaning behind the term "British humour". I adore it. It's delicious sarcasm.

Every morning after I woke up, I feel so lethargic and basically don't feel like using my brains. In time, my thinking powers will deplete. This means that I have to boost up the brain cells when University starts.

Look Around

Looking at all these disasters happening around the world made me realised how blessed we are in good old Singapore.

Of course, I already knew that from the beginning. Yes, I have my grouses about the country but generally, I am a proud citizen of this tiny red dot. That's why it pisses me off when there are people who not only don't appreciate what this country brings for us but go on and on with all sorts of demands. Really? Please, look around you before opening that mouth.

Some people just aren't content. With clothes on their backs, a house to return to, jobs waiting for you and all that jazz, some people just want more. That does not necessary mean that I don't want more. On the contrary, I have big dreams and worldly demands just like anybody.

Celebration of Learning 2011

Celebration of Learning marks the end of the 3 years in Poly.

Today, each of us was given a rose and received our SIP certificate to certify that one had completed the internship.

It was our last chance to take photos as a class and with teachers. Alas, I didn't manage to take a group photo with my project group mates. Hopefully, we can do that during graduation. I'm glad I stayed for a while to take pictures with some lecturers who taught me before. I am a very sentimental person who is nostalgic. Too nostalgic for my own good.

I also took pictures of the Director's Honours List AY2009/2010 board as my name was on it. Yes, it was one of the proudest moments of my school life. One of the few times I actually got recognised.

I, too, signed on as a alumni. No harm doing that, I figured.

All in all, it was a good event, too bad on the photos. Looking at the school, I realised that I have many fond memories. Projects and exams get on me, but seeing the results, it is almost worth it. Sighs, and now it's over.

Graduation next.

The King's Speech movie review

Finally, I went to watch The King's Speech with my cousin today. It is worth the hype and meets my expectations. Colin Firth, in particular, truly deserves his Oscar after his absolutely poignant performance as the stuttering King George IV.

While the film is portrayed to be light-hearted most of the times, there are moments where it is quite emotionally compelling. I mean, I empathise people who have problems speaking to the public. While I don't stammer, I blushed terribly every single time I had to do a presentation.

Tom Hooper did great as a director and the story-telling is wonderful. While slow at times, the gradual change in the king's speech is very real. Some called it a feel-good movie.

Does the movie deserves the Best Picture Award? Why not? The actors' exceptional performances are what make this film a success. The banter between Geoffrey Rush and Colin Firth shows their chemistry and I have to say, Geoffrey Rush's portrayal of the "eccentric" Lionel Logue is delightful.

The score by Alexandre Desplat is awesome as well. I enjoyed myself tremedulously and this film is a keeper.

Over & Out

Exams are over and I'm out of school!

Phew, the relief I felt after the Legal Aspects of Business paper ended was indescribable. That feeling of high tension I put myself through to keep my pace was gone as soon as the clock stroke 4.30pm.

It wasn't the difficult paper I envisioned and I finished it with time to spare. I found it doable, just like Managerial Account 2.

Now, eyes will be on my final grades for the semester, which will either make or break my cumulative GPA. For studies, I have never wanted something more than I want my GPA to reflect my hard work. Seriously, I have put in so much effort and sheer hard work this 3 years, and I don't want it to all go to naught just because of one lousy semester.

So, after the paper, my group and I went down to Timbre at Clarke Quay to celebrate. I have never been to that part before so it was truly an experience. Since we reached at about 6pm, we were their first customers.

My friend ordered a Margarita and I drank 2 sips. It was not bad, except that I like it better when the ice melted. We left before the live band started.

And that day was officially the last day of the Poly life. I can't say whether I am sad to leave because I am still not recovering from the "high" that is holidays.

I have push myself really hard these past weeks, even going into computer-celibacy. I never have chance for leisure reading and I cut down on time spent online during the exam season. During projects, all I did was surfed the net for related subjects.

I expect that withdrawal symptoms will kick in soon.

One thing I hope to get fulfil before University starts is to, of course, go for a vacation in the States. Really, really, please. I want to do something for myself once. I need a fairy godmother.

Preparation for Exams

In the midst of studying for MA2 paper this Friday.

Since Saturday, I have been pacing myself to finish studying, re-doing all tutorials and completing two sets of past exam papers, all in the name of preparing for the paper.

Today is Wednesday, and I am ready to take on the paper. I can hardly wait to do it, to get it over and done with. I can't say that I'm ready for the exam, but I feel like I have studied enough.

If only those who studied hard will be rewarded, alas, that is not always the case.

I know, I am neglecting Legal Aspects of Business in favour of MA2. But I don't do multi-tasking for exams. It's either this or that. And with one paper not yet done, I can't move on to the next.

I am hard-press for time to study for law.

Viva La Liberation

Disappointment. Cut by a knife.

What do these words have in common? In this semester, I have received a horrifying D and C+. Never in my 6 semesters have I received such a bad grade before, perhaps only once in Year 1.1 for some minor individual project.

Semester 3.2 is easily the WORST semester ever in my entire life in TP.

Good gods! The tides have turned. The tables are turned. The stakes are stacked sky-high, tethering over me like a tower of cards. Those cards which I thought I carefully built up.

Why?! What a crap of a semester! I feel like cursing at the unfairness of it all! What are the odds that we get less-than-stellar lecturers, disgusting subjects (I'm looking at you, International Business and Managerial Accounting 2), difficult and vague projects (once again, International Business), unnecessary tests and examinations that ruin my life all in one semester?

It's like a present, only one that is meant to hurt.

Seriously, I am depressed and worried over my cumulative GPA. Before the disasters, I had gleefully thought that I should be able to get a place in NUS. That is my goal, to get into one of the 3 local Universities with a diploma. This means a lot to me, to the meaning in life.

NUS is the top choice. NTU next and SMU last.

Do you realise how dash and miserable I'll be when I received the text in March with my crappy results? I'll probably bawl my eyes out.

I'm not always this competitive. Even now, I don't think I am that actively seeking competition. Sure, I would want to know who are the main competitors and the worthy ones, at least in my class.

For me, it's like being middle-class. You are not worse off than some (those who fail, get Cs and Ds) but you are not better off too. I guess I can never be on par to those high achievers and high flyers. I reckon I am content being middle-class, because there are many layers to it. As long as I am above average, that will make me happy.

It's not like I want to compare, I mean, you can't be in your world right? I wish I had it easy, once upon a time, Bs are all that I want, but it's not possible now. Not when I had a piece of recognition and I want more. I need more.

As are what I what.

You have no idea how low my spirits got when I saw the grade on the law project. It's so horrible that if I got it back, I'll burn it. A freaking C+! I can't believe my eyes when I saw it. The D I received for Managerial Accounting 2 paper was alright because it was truly difficult. But this, did I expect it? Never!

I hate the lecturer from then on. It's not like she is a good tutor to begin with. It's the last lesson anyway, the chances of seeing her again is close to nil.

I'm practical. I am good to those who are good to me. And I bear a grudge to those who don't. It's life. I often think back of the old times, even in primary school, when I had the good fortune to meet good teachers who really make a difference. Alas, the black sheep among the teaching body grew with each level of education.

Look at the example in my school. Yes, they may have the experience, skills and qualifications needed in the working world do not mean that they can teach. Some of them just drone on and on and on (the finger is pointing at you, Managerial Accounting 2).

Grouses

Why am I having so many grouses now? Sighs, all I can say is that this is the last time anyway. I am thankful that once the project is passed up tomorrow, I will be free, for now.

Seriously, I don't understand. I am no perfectionist, sure, I like things to be neat, tidy and done a certain way but I can be hardly called obsessed.

Consider this my last gift to them, I am not saying they are of no help at all. But when I am doing most of the stuff, well, my temper is going to take a blow.

If not the high stakes stack against me, if not for my desire to score, I would have a heck-care attitude too, I reckon. Sometimes, I wonder how people will cope without me...

I'll laugh when I get a good grade for International Business. I know I definitely deserve it because I put in so much effort and care. I did the most research and all that jazz. Ha, so be it.

Fingers crossed.

Miffed

I'm miffed. Not freaking pissed off, but just a little miffed.

Is it the stress getting to me or something else?

I know I am blessed with pretty competent group members. I know that I'm not that perfect myself. That's why you don't see me complaining until now. I have to admit I am a little angry at the work they are producing now, some more than the others.

One and a half years, I reckon our group is one of the few who have withstand internal conflicts and free-riders. But, of course, not all is rosy. I feel that we are just tolerating for each other's sake and to keep the peace at large.

I am certainly tolerating some of them and thankfully, this matter will just stop here since this is the last term and the last week. Besides, it's not as if they are free-riders or do not do work at all. And they are useful in certain tasks I am not good in, so I can hardly complain, can I?

Perhaps, I would feel that some are a bit clueless. Or maybe my mind whirl too fast for their own good. I don't understand why I have to keep repeating myself and they still don't get the gist of the point. I remembered it was the same in the past and luckily, I insisted the project to be done that way and look what I got myself, a distinction.

I'm not saying that I am always right or infallible. On the contrary, I depend on them too. I can't do it without them and neither can they do it without me.

Sighs, only 4 more days. Correction, only 3 more days till the last project!

I can only keep my comments to myself. And this thought chilled me, I still have group work to look forward to in University and god knows I won't be so lucky to score responsible and competent group members every single time.

Somehow, I was never the same after internship.

Wish: USA

Ok, I really, really want to go to USA once I graduated from Poly. Like seriously.

I have been looking forward to this trip since last year and have save quite a sum for it. All the money I earn from my work and internship are in the bank, waiting to be spent.

It's now or never. I don't mean for it to sound so morbid but it's true. This is a good time to just "let down my hair" and be sinful for a couple of weeks. You would think that after more than 13 years of schooling and stress, I deserve that two weeks vacation.

Anyway, I am not intending to use the parents' money for this trip. Everything will come from my own pocket and it will be sweet.

When will I ever get the time and spirit to truly enjoy myself again? University is not going to be a blast and it only means more stress to come once the term starts. After that, perhaps there will be time for a graduation trip and then it's out to the working world.

And you know what happens when you have a real job - no more holidays! All you get are public holidays and 14 days of leave. But when you are old, going on a trip seems to be a drag?

Recently, I and a couple of friends were lamenting how difficult Life is. Truly, when you are this young, with a long future in front of you, you have to wonder how to make it right.

To project it to the future, how can we cramp University, work and getting hitched into the 10 years before hitting 30? To me, 30 is considered old, in a way. As a friend puts it, by 30, she wants to accomplish something.

Well, well, well. I guess I'm glad that I am not the only one getting all jittery and suffering from what is coined "quarter-life crisis". I used to think I worry and want too much. I am not really to grow up and be an Adult. I am responsible, yes, but to tackle all these issues, gods, I have no confidence in myself, at all.

So what now? I can always go to Orlando during the year, but there is nothing to cheer about. I am planning to use this trip to reward myself for all these years in school and all that jazz. Now, the plans seem to go down into the drain, and I don't know how to salvage it.

The big problem here is NO ONE can accompany me. It is too expensive, for one. And with me having no confidence to make this trip alone, I have no idea how to pull this off. Countless of people travel by themselves daily, I don't see why I can't do it. And what with the distance being so far away, I need someone by my side!

I can go to LA, but there is no one to accompany me to Orlando, Florida and this is the crucial part of this trip. It may sounds silly a reason to make this trip because of the Wizarding World but I don't see why can't I enjoy what I want.

I still wish I can make it. This will be the greatest thing I done for myself. I hope that somehow, I can go there, even if it's only one or two days in Orlando.

I want to shop till I drop too. Shop and sightsee, oh please. I can always find my friend in LA and then travel to Orlando by myself and stay inside Universal Studios where it is deem safer. The only downside is that I won't be able to venture outside of Universal Studios.

Truth is, I only have enough to make this one trip, and make it memorable I shall. After that, it's saving all the way till I can go for my University graduation trip.

There is simply no second chance. This is why I am in such a dilemma. I want to seriously enjoy myself, do the things I want and plan to do. If there is a compromise, it depends on what it shall be.

Hiatus

Hiatus again, I know.

Life is hectic, or should I say, school is hectic. There's only less than a month before this all ends. And then what?

It's Lunar New Year again! I'm so glad that I get this small break in the middle of the week, no less.

I had no classes on Wednesday so it's an extra day off for me. The best thing is, the weather cleared up as soon as the first day of the new year rolled in. How awesome is that?

Lunar new year's eve reunion dinner is an annual affair of steamboat. I look forward to this day every year, partly because it is the only time we get to eat steamboat. After the satisfying dinner, we watched Red Cliff and received red packets from the adults.

The first day of the new year started the same as every year. There were only a few houses to visit and we went to my cousin's house afterwards. Dinner was KFC.

If there's one thing I look forward, it's the "binge-eating" and unhealthy food you shoved into your mouth. No proper food for two days made one missed normal dishes.

The second day was more fun as we went to Sentosa in the evening. Gods, the place was teeming with tourists from the region and it was too crowded for me. Went the Candylicious but ended up not buying anything.

All too soon, the chinese new year break came to an end and I can only look forward to it next year. Sighs, what will next year brings?

No Rest for the Weary

It's been a busy week and more to come. What else is new right?

This week, it's all about touching up on projects and studying for the mid-semester tests. I like to do things one at a time, but alas, the schedule hardly allows me to do so.

3 days of evening tests makes me a unhappy person. It means going home late, and seriously, 3 days of exams in a row?

I'm kind of in a blank, so there's nothing much to write on. There is no chance to enjoy the last semester of the polytechnic life.

Pre-U Jitters

Is it me, or everyone who face this?

I am graduating in 2 months time, gasp! The formal graduation ceremony will be in May but still, in 2 months!

Till today, I have not given much substantial thoughts on University. As much as I am paranoid, I still go by the concept of "living for the day". To me, it have been " I will think about it when the boat docks".

It's like secondary-tertiary drama again. People say "you only live once, so realise your dreams and lead your own life". However, there is also a saying of "you only live once, make the best out of it".

These two phases are different, no? One is saying you should be daring, dream and go far, fulfill your dreams to the fullest. On the other hand, you should planned out your path carefully, and not to make stupid mistakes.

Polytechnic-University is a phrase where it is the hardest to overcome. I made up my mind to go to a University when I was in secondary school, my goal is further cemented by my good results. It is not always smooth-sailing for me but I get by.

You think I don't want to choose what I like? For some reason, I find myself liking Economics and want to take that as a major. But, come to think of it, I think I'll pass. First, I don't have the confidence to do well.

You may think it's paranoid, but it's University. It's not child's play. It's not like secondary school where you can get through without much injuries, I know, I failed A Maths for nearly all 2 years until O levels. It's not even like polytechnic.

The fees for a semester in University is atrocious and I don't have the money to spend on finding my interest, thank you very much.

In the University life I envision, I don't want to slave all day long just to scrape a pass. As much as studies are concerned, I want to take breaks in between too. Some people are so good that they can juggle between friends, activities, studies, work and still score.

I am not that, unfortunately. I work myself off to get to where I am, which is not much.

Back to the issue of Economics. Generally, students agree that Economics is a hard major. But, they also say, if that's where your interest lies, you will have the passion to do well. To my horror, calculus and maths are part of economics.

What a bummer! I am hopeless in maths. I scraped pass A Maths, thinking I'll never get through that nightmare again.

I rather do well in something I have no interest in than to scrape a pass for something I am interested in. Really. To put another analogy, if you know for certain that it's a hard life you'll lead with someone, why do you still choose to marry him? Love can only get you that far.

Same here. I will only regret it if I make impulsive decisions. I used to make them in the past, but thankfully, I got out of the 'mess'.

Mind over heart. For too long, I have allow my heart to make decisions. I want to weigh the pros and cons of each potential decision before settling on the one that is the best for me in the long run.

Looking at all the courses, I don't know which to take. I am completely ruling out Engineering and Chemistry. Maths is out too, there is just something in me that can't handle maths, especially calculus.

We'll see, won't we?

Stuck

Another year. To go from an end to a start takes only a short transaction. But for a start to reach an end, wow, it takes ages.

Friday's night was a blast. We ate at Bakerzin at Jurong Point and played two rounds of bowling.

Sometimes, I amazed myself with my bowling skills. I do not have the strength to exactly swing the ball and roll, you see. My style is practically non-existence. However, I did manage to hit a score of 100, not bad for someone who play for a few times a year.

I still remembered that humiliating experience when I went for the bowling trial in my school.

After that, we went to TCC at Clarke Quay to pass time before making our way down to Marina Bay to be part of the crowds for the countdown.

The fireworks were beautiful, as always. It was a nightmare after that ended though, as expected that huge crowds were eager to be out and what was made worse was people pushing and squeezing.

I had my first anxiety attack of the year. Some inconsiderate people kept pushing and in my mind, I was thinking what will happen if there is a stampede. Or worse, given these unstable circumstances around the world, a bomb threat.

In the end, the roads that were cornered off by barricades were pushed aside by anxious people and we're literally stopping traffic. All the people, including us, flooded the roads, just like that. The traffic lights makes no difference as were the cars, since they were the ones not moving.

We got stuck in the middle of the road because it was another bottleneck in front. It was a traffic jam alright.

I witnessed a bus with passengers on it being pushed by a commuter and a couple of traffic police opening the road for it.

As most people swarmed to the nearby MRT station, we breathed a sign of relief as we got into our cars. Of course, we got caught in another jam but it wasn't as bad.

It was 2 am plus when we reached home. I can only imagine the conditions on the public transport. Phew, I was lucky enough not be one of the commuters.

The Year MMXI

Pop the champagne bottle!

It's a brand new spanking year, everyone! Though there is not much difference between the last day of 2010 and the first day of 2011, the new year stills seem to thrill.

Let's ring in the new year with deadlines, exams and oh, graduation. How lovely, if you get my satirical tone.

By the way, did I mention that my ex-boss in that godforsaken ex-company still owe me the very important performance appraisal? Seriously, what is wrong with his mind?! Is it that difficult to do it, and mail it to me.

I told him that I have definitely have to get it by this, no, last year. He gave me his promise. Hmm, from what I learn in contract law, there is a binding contract between us. The offer is accepted by both the offeror (me) and the offeree (him).

Now what? I sms-ed him freaking twice to remind him of the importance. What did I get? Nothing, nada, nil. The way he does things is starting to piss me off. To think I wrote good things about his company. Pheesh, I pity whoever is interning with him this year.

Gods, what is so difficult about sending a reassuring sms, or an email telling me that he has sent that letter. Is it so freaking difficult?! Huh?

30-35% of my grade is in that appraisal. Do you think I like being a "loanshark"? It does reflect badly on me, doesn't it? But what can I do? If I do things otherwise, I'll only be letting myself down.

I have come too far to let everything go to waste. I've been the perfect "servant" for 11 weeks, the last thing they can give me is to pass me back my appraisal.

I thought I can leave those memories in the past, but it seems to haunt me till today.

The Year Gone By

Woah, hold that champagne bottle! New Year is not here, not yet anyway.

Where has the year gone?! I wonder. It seems like I just read the newspaper about the The Aughties and write that post to celebrate 2010.

Looking back, 2010 is a year filled to the brim with events and memorable memories.

The inaugural Youth Olympics Games held in Singapore, now who can forget that? It was a defining moment for us as we stood in the stands at The Float singing the National Anthem and world youth athletes celebrated their legacy. We are part of history.

Riverdance at Marina Bay Sands is another first. Riverdance tours is bidding Singapore goodbye and I am so glad that I managed to catch it live, for the first time at the gleaming new Marina Bay Sands theater.

Not to mention, this is our first time staying at Marina Bay Sands, in a suite no less. The view from the Sky Park is amazing and now I see can why it is the new jewel in the skyline of Singapore.

I got into Director's Honours List 2010 which made the past year of hard work worth it. I have been waiting for that day for one year. To earn that certificate is more than what I deserve.

How could I forget the 11weeks of internship that haunts me till this day. It was, overall, a good experience but I wouldn't want to do it again. Now, that is one thing best left in the past.

On the entertainment side, 2010 earns special mention for "movies of the year". There is the start of an end - Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 1, Eclipse, Rapunzel: A Tangled Tale, How to Train your Dragon, Alice in Wonderland etc.

There is also the grand opening of The Wizarding World of Harry Potter theme park at Orlando, Florida, World Cup at South Africa which Paul the Oracle Octopus got famous, the problems-packed Commonwealth Games at India and many more.
Orchard Road flooding, anyone? Where passers-by were trapped by knee-height muddy waters along the prized shopping belt. Now, that was memorable because up till that day, flooding in Singapore is close to non-existence.
Other more sombre matters to note are Mdm Kwa Geok Choo's passing - others would remember her as the late Mrs Lee, the Downtown East fatal slashing where apparently gangs are still thriving in Singapore.

Like always, I don't want the year to end. It's too fast, always too fast for me to play catch up. I look back and think, why? Year 2010 leaves much to be desired and yet, 2011 is not any better. For a start, the first 2 months are jam-packed of exams and projects submissions and did I mention, I am graduating.

White Christmas 2010

I'm dreaming of a white Christmas, and got the wish!

Except that we are situated along the equator, and that makes the temperatures up in the sky impossible for snow to form. But, we got the precipitation form.

Christmas eve was as awesome as always. I had to work till 6.30pm though, but that's alright. With the table groaning under the weight of all that food, we toasted to a happy holiday season. There was a brand new Christmas tree and of course, there were lots of presents under it. Santa has been to town.

We sang along to Christmas carols, and played games. We had to draw lots for the presents and had plenty of laughter.

Christmas morning came bright and early and we met up for a session of bowling at Safra Changi. I didn't play because I had my nails all nicely done up in pink with blue glitter french tips.

It was a wet Christmas alright. It was raining and drizzling the whole day.

We went to an Aunt's house to gather for another Christmas feast and rushed down to Plaza Singapura to catch The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawntreader.

As always, like every year, Orchard was filled to the brim with revellers. After dinner at Sakae Sushi at Orchard Central, we waited till the rain stopped before strolling down Orchard Road to soak in the yuletide spirit and take in the lights.

After that, we had a coffee break at TCC and just in time to be in the shelter before the downpour begun. It will be the perfect Christmas if only the rain took a solid form. Instead of being in the shelter, we'll be in our winter wear with snow falling on our heads.

I wondered what happened to those people behind us and those VIPs watching the open-air concert in the middle of the road, caught in the sudden downpour. I guessed it will be a mad dash.

All too soon, it was time to part and yet another Christmas came to an end. It was a great season, with lots of songs, activities and memories.

Cheers to years of glorious Christmases ahead!

Finally

Ho, ho, ho! I had finally had the interview with my ex-boss and I got my cheque. Phew, I thought I will never see the day. There's only the performance appraisal left. But, they say they will mail it by year's end.

As Christmas nears, I am sort of getting a whiplash. I dread it, yet love the whole season in general. Why dread, you ask? It's because it means a lot to me, to see it passed, means I will have to wait for another year.

Seriously, the prospect of the new year is not very tempting. I guess I dread 2011 more than any other years because I will be graduating soon. Like real soon. And I have been in a "quarter-life crisis" since I was in secondary school.

I want to continue studying, really. But, we'll see how it goes. I seem to remember vaguely the troubles I have when I left secondary school and going on to tertiary education.

Ahh well, I want to promise that I won't put any more depressing posts, at least till the end of the year. I'll try.

White December

By Canele
Only 5 days to Christmas.

December always move too fast for my liking. For 11 months, I lamented over the slow pace of the year, yet when December comes around, it just disappears in a twinkle of an eye.

After this week, it's the New Year's week and poof! 2011 is here. Arghhh, no! It's too fast, I have yet to enjoy myself fully.

I always hate the new year, it's a year of beginnings, expectations and hopes. And I dislike that. There is the feeling that you have aged one more year, and the world will be different.

It's another year to endure. I'm the type of person who looks back and thinks of the good old days.

We all dream of a white Christmas, especially in the tropics. But, as you know, too much of a good thing can become a bad thing. Just look at the conditions in Europe now, I'll bet they are sick and tired of the snow.

Indeed, the heavy snow storms and blizzards wrecked havoc and chaos across Europe. From London to Paris to Belgium, international airports has to close in the busiest season. Traffic comes to a standstill and people are suffering.

Next week, I will compile a list of the interesting events that took place in Singapore and the days which are the most memorable in my life.

Not Amused

I. Am. Not. Amused. At. All.

You can be sure that I am not a happy camper. I mean, not a peep from those in the godforsaken company since the 15th, which is supposed to be pay day. So, what now? Pray tell.

I have signed myself for their Christmas party thing, which is lucky they invite us. Wow, I never thought I will see this day. *Roll eyes* I signed myself up so that I can have this chance to get things over and done with. At least, when you are face to face with those people, you can ask them and get the answers, or at least some sort of confirmation.

Why are they doing this to us anyway!? Any remote fondness I have of them is now passe. You are kidding me if you thought that I will be like a good little dog to go running back.

Like I said over and over again, if not for that project in which I have to interview an entrepreneur, I wouldn't have bother that much. No pay? I'll just let the liaison officer handle it. No appraisal? Tell the liaison officer.

Just because I have this little bright spot I have to erase, I have to grit my teeth to bear with this kind of nonsense. Now I know how those salespeople feel when people bang the door on their faces. How rude, just because you are "high and mighty".

I don't know, I can keep trying, but that just shows how desperate I am and I hate that feeling. I suppose I can look for a back-up, but who? Who is an entrepreneur, whom I know of?

Time will tell, for now, I am looking at this issue from all kinds of angles, thinking of different problems that could arise and how to solve them.

Tis the season to be jolly? You bet. Not.

Grrr

Grrr, I am really pissed off right now. And it's all thanks to that stupid company which I used to intern with. Right, the problem is that they still own me my pay.

I am angry because they did not bother to even message me to tell me that the pay cheque is out. What the crap?

Second thing is that I email the boss, wanting to have an interview with him for my project. Ok, I am the desperate one here. I want to get things done, as soon as possible. Therefore, I am pushing for the interview to be done pronto.

Not to mention, I have yet to get my appraisal. Gods, why are things so messed up? I hate it when things are left hanging. I really do.

Please, just let me do this according to what I want.

Flustering

It's a week to Christmas and I am in a fluster. It's all pointless worries, maybe. The year is ending and I have so much to accomplish, to do, to hand up. I have deadlines to meet, which stinks.
-
The more I think about, the more depressing it seems. I can't even properly enjoy Christmas and New Year in peace. I hope to finish what I want to accomplish by the first week.
-
I don't know, I need to get back on my feet again. After nearly 3 months of internship, which I have sort of lost track with, I can't find myself. Like my friends, I shared the same feelings as them.
-
You CAN'T be a zombie when you are in school, that's for sure. Back in internship, it's all robotic and you can shut your mind out. When the sun sets, oh, it's time to go home and enjoy yourself before repeating the motion again for the next day.

I like school, I just don't like the responsibilities you have for yourself, the stress you pile yourself with.

I'm very bothered by the fact that I am relying on the company to help me in my individual project. Please, if not for that, and my pay and appraisal, I wouldn't have care about what they are doing or whatever.

Commercialised Christmas

Who doesn't love Christmas? Not me, for certain. In fact, I love Christmas and it is one of my favourite holidays of the year.
-
What's that not to like? The sights. The sounds. The smells. The feel. Christmas fills your five senses and it's everywhere!
-
People have been saying for years that Christmas has become too commercialised. I agree but that is partly what I love about this festive holiday.
-
The Christmas advertisements for various shopping malls, the streets all decked in in Christmas finery. The fake poinsettias and wreaths. Christmas shopping and exchanging presents have all but become part of the norm, even a tradition.
-
I grow in an environment of commercialised Christmases. Besides, I am not a religious person so Christmas is all about chocolates, lots of goodies, sales, presents and being with family. I can enjoy everything at its fullest, from Ole St Nick to Christmas trees to presents to traditional Christmas songs.
-
Don't be mistaken though, I love the idea of traditional Christmas too. You know, snow gently falling outside, logs smothering in the fireplace, sharing a toast and roasting chestnuts, building a snowman, having a real Christmas tree. I love all those and it's one of the dreams of mine to live this out.
-
I want to celebrate a white Christmas, not what Europe is facing now though. But, when you situated in Singapore, the epitome of what Christmas is not, you have to make it work. No snow will be falling but we make do.
-
Christmas always makes me nostalgic, as I have said over again. I don't know why but I just feel that another year is ending and I didn't achieve what I wanted. Somehow I feel a little excluded, like a person who look from outside at the celebrations going on inside a house. It's silly thinking but Christmas makes me feel that way.
-
I make it a point to visit Orchard when it's near Christmas time to soak in this festive spirits. I want to see the Christmas lights and take in the sights of the wondrous displays of presents and sales. I love the sounds of Christmas carols in the air and the bags of presents that shoppers carried.
-
Commercialism has never look so good.

Tangled Movie Review

Disney released this latest "princess" movie dubbed Tangled, or in the case of Asia, Rapunzel: A Tangled Tale to celebrate its 50th animated feature.

It has been quite long since I last watched a new princess movie. I mean, I didn't manage to catch The Princess and the Frog in 2009.

Tangled/Rapunzel is certainly a keeper.

The storyline has been changed and yet, strangely, I don't feel insulted. Rapunzel is one of the beloved fairy tales where the princess and the prince lived happily ever after. However, there is no prince in this remake and Rapunzel is so much cooler in here.

The plot has not been mangled till it lost the magic .

The animations is so awesome and detailed! I love the lusciousness of Rapunzel's hair and the 3D effects are pretty well-done. It is said that this film incorporated CGI with the old hand-drawn Disney Classic feel.

Although some people have mentioned that the songs are not as powerful as those in Beauty and the Beast or Pocahontas, I think that the soundtrack is one of the beautiful parts in this movie.

Mandy Moore has captured her role as Rapunzel perfectly with her delightful voice and singing. Zach Levi has also scored well as Flynn. Maximus and Parscal are too adorable, even if they do not speak.

I guess what appeals me is the new story-telling and the generally feel-good effect you felt. Though when they are singing "I see the light", my eyes do get a little teary. What can I say? Even fairy tales are capable of reducing me to tears.

UP has captured emotions brilliantly. Wall-E and How to Train Your Dragon break boundaries in the animation industry. These films received raving reviews and their soundtracks surpass expectations.

Tangled is definitely high up on the list of must-watch animated films. It just delights a person.

I cannot believed that Disney is thinking of doing the unmentionable - to stop making princess movies for the time being. That is preposterous, as echoed by many fans from all ages. We grow up with Disney classics, even those who are older now. Disney's princess movies are almost like one of its trademarks, just like Mickey Mouse.

The early movies of my life consist of animations and fairy tales. I hope that Disney will not forsake their legacy.

Riverdance at Marina Bay Sands

On Saturday, we went to Marina Bay Sands for a mini-holiday of our own.

Two weeks ago, I booked the 1 night Riverdance Package which consisted of 2 A-reserve tickets to Riverdance and a night stay at the Atrium Premium room. The whole package cost about S$589. It was worth it because those tickets would have cost S$150 each.

We got lucky again. The original room that we booked was not available and we got upgraded to Sands Suite instead. We also received a S$50 voucher to spend in the hotel.

The whole hotel is so grand although there are simply too many types of people walking up and down. The towers look impressive from a height and of course, how can we forget the view that is waiting for us at level 57?

It is too bad our room is located on the 5th level. It was too low to see anything magnificent although the construction of Gardens by the Bay is right in front of us.

The room is obviously beautiful and spacious. There is only one king-size bed but we got 1 en-suite, 1 bathroom, and a sitting area. There are two large screen TVs and a beautiful white bath-tub.

We changed and went up to Sands SkyPark. The infinity pool looks really great and I can’t help but to feel proud that Singapore has such a wondrous building. Being a Singaporean, I am too thrilled given the opportunity to be up there. It is no wonder tourists will gaze in wonder at this cleverly structured swimming pool. I overheard some people saying they don’t dare to swim in to pool as they may fall over.

Indeed, the feeling of the infinity pool is that it gives swimmers a sense of being at the edge. The design is seemingly seamless and minimalistic.

After dinner at Rasapura, we went to SweetSpot, a cafe selling an array of beautifully made desserts with fine pricetags attached. Since we were given a $50 voucher, we used most of it on 3 pieces of desserts.

My mother and I walked over to the theatres where Riverdance is taking place. We have one of the best views in the theatre, I presume. We were in the stalls and somewhere in the middle. I am so happy to see that the whole theatre was nearly occupied and there were many foreigners. Of course, most of the audience were adults.

Riverdance is a combination of elegance and strength. The beauty of the female dancers who show their daintiness and lightness of feet. The powerful moves of the male dancers. The lightings are awesome and the choreography is perfect! The accompanying live music suits the different acts to the tee. The mood grew infectious towards the end and the dancers were greeted with a standing ovation in the final act.

The best part of the whole show? The Prime Minister and his family were there too!

After the satisfying show, we went back the hotel room and ate the desserts we bought.

I slept on the sofa while my brothers slept on the floor. It was too bad I couldn’t sleep properly because I was without blanket.

The next morning, I woke up quite early and the Standard Chartered Marathon was taking right in front of us. Before we checked out, we went up to the SkyPark again.

It was truly a gratifying mini holiday for me. We got the better end of the deal and enjoyed ourselves tremulously.
